Eating disorder recovery journal prompt #1: Reasons to choose recovery

If you know me, you know I love journaling. I didn’t used to, but ever since beginning eating disorder recovery, my journal has become my best friend.

I love journaling so much that I even created my own eating disorder recovery journal (10% of proceeds go to Bellatore Recovery, the eating disorder recovery treatment center that changed my life).

That said, let’s get into this eating disorder recovery journal prompt!

Why do this journal prompt?

For a few reasons:

  • To motivate you to start your eating disorder recovery journey. I made this list of reasons to recover very early in my recovery journey, and it was an important part of getting me out of quasi-eating disorder recovery and focused on actually choosing to recover from my eating disorder, for real.

  • To have on hard days. On hard days in eating disorder recovery, which always come and are completely normal, you can use this list as a motivational reminder for why you’re choosing to recover from your eating disorder.

  • To fight for your future self who doesn’t have an eating disorder. You can use your reasons to choose eating disorder recovery as a visualization tool. Visualization is an exercise in which you form a mental image of something, and you engage your five senses in a way that convinces your brain you’re actually doing whatever you’re visualizing.

Think about this like reading a book - the words you read create a picture in your head, and it feels like you’re really there. I encourage you to do the same thing as you write down reasons to recover from your eating disorder. Imagine your future self - what do they feel like? What do they do? What are they passionate about? Return to this list as needed to remind yourself of the future you that you’re fighting for.

So, if you’re curious about what my reasons for choosing eating disorder recovery are, or if you need some inspiration, I’m leaving my list below. I hope this helps you!
